Questions to Ask Your Breast Augmentation Surgeon

Charlotte, Gastonia, and Shelby, NC

What type of breast implants do you offer?

At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, we offer both silicone cohesive gel and saline filled implants in a range of shapes and sizes. The type of breast implant you choose for your breast augmentation will determine the final look and feel of your new breasts.

Our board-certified plastic surgeons will work closely with you during your free consultation to help you determine which type of breast implant will best suit your needs.

What options do you offer for incision placement?

Our plastic surgeons offer all traditional breast augmentation incision options. These options are underneath your breast in the fold between your breast and your rib cage, around the nipple, or through the axilla. Taking factors like implant placement and visible scarring into account, we will help you determine what incision option works best for you.

What are my placement options for breast augmentation?

We can place your breast implant under the breast muscle or under the fatty tissue in your breast, just above the breast muscle. Our doctors generally recommend breast implant placement under your breast muscle. It has been our experience that this produces the most natural looking results with the smallest risk of complications. Acknowledging that each patient has unique desires, we will listen closely to your needs, and help you choose the placement option that gives you the look you wish to achieve.

How long does recovery from breast augmentation take?

Recovering from breast augmentation surgery depends greatly on your body’s natural ability to heal. We recommend a minimum of one week rest after your surgery in which you minimize physical activity. To reduce the risk of excessive bleeding and unnecessary swelling, we recommend you wait at least two weeks before you engage in strenuous physical activities.

Our breast surgeons will provide you with full information regarding ways to speed recovery both before and after your breast augmentation procedure.

Is breast augmentation safe?

Breast augmentation is a common procedure--over 300,000 are performed every year in the United States--but it is not without its risks. As with any surgery, excessive bleeding, swelling, blood clots, and infection are possible. Additionally, breast augmentation surgery may diminish sensitivity in your breasts, and make breast feeding difficult or impossible.

Complications are uncommon and major complications are rare. Post-surgical risks with breast implants include capsular contracture, ruptured implants, or skin wrinkling above and around the implant. All potential complications and risks will be discussed with you during your free breast augmentation consultation.
