Questions about Reconstructive Breast Surgery
Charlotte, Gastonia, and Shelby, NC
Am I an ideal candidate for breast reconstruction?
Ideal candidates for breast reconstruction surgery are women who wish to restore symmetry and balance to their chests after a mastectomy. Other candidates include women who were born with a breast deformity or have suffered trauma that has affected the appearance of their breasts.
During your breast reconstruction consultation, our board-certified reconstructive surgeons will help you determine if breast reconstruction is right for you.
What are my options for breast reconstruction surgery?
At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, our breast reconstruction surgeons can reconstruct your breasts with breast implants, tissue flaps, or a combination of tissue flaps and implants. We perform both latissimus dorsi and TRAM flaps.
We have found that implant surgery is better for most patients due to its decreased healing time, faster recovery and final aesthetic results. However, we will listen to your concerns and fully respect your desires when it comes to choosing which procedure you would prefer and is best for you.
Will my breasts look and feel different after breast reconstruction surgery?
Breast reconstruction offers a wonderful solution for women who have lost a breast to cancer. We take great care to ensure your results will look and feel as natural as possible. It is important to remember that even the most skilled surgeon cannot produce a breast that is identical to those you were born with, but symmetry can be restored, and confidence regained through this procedure.
Will breast reconstruction surgery affect future cancer screenings and treatments?
In many cases, cancer screening is not necessary in reconstructed breasts. Concerns about future cancer screenings can be discussed in your breast reconstruction consultation and with your doctor.
Is breast reconstruction covered by insurance?
The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act was passed into law on October 21, 1998. Under this law, insurance companies are required to cover the cost of breast reconstruction surgery including surgery performed on the other breast to restore symmetry. This coverage is extended only to women who have had a mastectomy due to cancer.
