Questions about Nose Surgery
Charlotte, Gastonia, and Shelby, NC
What is nose surgery?
Nose surgery, also called rhinoplasty or a nose job, is surgery to improve the appearance, proportion, and/or function of your nose.
What can nose surgery do for me?
Nose surgery is a powerful procedure that can correct most people's complaints about the appearance of their nose. We often perform nose surgery to correct:
- A nose that is disproportionally large or small compared to the other features of the face
- Nose that is too wide
- A bridge that has humps, bumps, or an unattractive slope
- A nasal tip that is too large, too bulbous
- A nasal tip that is drooping or upturned
- Large, wide, or upturned nostrils
- Asymmetry or crookedness
Nose surgery is equally effective at correcting features that are developmental or due to injury. Revision rhinoplasty is more challenging, but our plastic surgeons have performed numerous surgeries to correct prior nose surgery results and can help you.
Who is a good candidate for nose surgery?
Good candidates for nose surgery have one or more specific features of the nose that they desire to correct, including the features above. Sometimes, it is not the nose that is the problem, but the relative proportion of the nose to the chin, cheeks or other facial procedures, and a facial implant may be recommended instead of or in addition to nose surgery. Otherwise, a good candidate for nose surgery:
- Has a nose that has finished growing
- Is physically healthy
- Is not taking drugs or supplements that can increase risk
- Takes the time to understand the procedure, its benefits, and risks

How does my surgeon decide how to reshape my nose?
First, your surgeon will listen to your concerns about your nose. He will try to understand what it is about the appearance of your nose that impacts your self-confidence, and first design a procedure that will address these concerns. Overall, the goal is to create a new nose that is in harmony with the appearance of your other facial features.
Can I know what my new nose will look like?
Your surgeon will show you examples of previous nose surgery patients in our before and after gallery so that you can get an idea of the results you can expect from the procedure. During your complimentary consultation, other pictures will be available as well. These will give you a good idea about the results you can expect. It is impossible to predict the exact shape of your new nose, but when you look at previous results, you will have a good idea of what it will be like and confidence that it will look good.
What is the difference between closed and open nose surgery?
In closed nose surgery, all the incisions are made inside the nose. Open nose surgery has a small incision in the columella, the skin between the nostrils. This procedure allows for greater visibility of the nasal structure and may be necessary for more complicated correction. In general, the incision in open nose surgery heals well and leaves only a very subtle scar.
When will I see my final results from nose surgery?
After nose surgery, you may have a splint on the nose and either tubes or packing in the nostrils to help your nose heal in its desired shape. There will be some swelling and bruising, and you will experience some discomfort, typically controllable with medications. You should count on taking at least a week off from work, and by the time you get back to work, most of the bruising and discomfort should be gone. Swelling may persist for several months, but grow increasingly subtle. You should see final results by six months to a year after your surgery.
How long will my results from nose surgery last?
Results from nose surgery are generally permanent. Some people, though, experience changes in their nose as a natural result of aging.
