Male Breast Reduction

Charlotte, Gastonia, and Shelby, NC

Stubborn, fat and breast tissue in the chest can make men look as though they have women's breasts. This condition can be brought about by factors like age, genetics, and weight gain, and affects thousands of men in the United States. Diet and exercise are often insufficient to diminish the appearance of male breasts. While the rest of your body becomes toned and masculine, your upper body may remain untouched. Your breasts may even grow more prominent as your pectoral muscles develop.

At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, our board-certified surgeons know how embarrassing this problem can be. During your male breast reduction consultation, we will determine what is causing the unattractive appearance of your breasts, and suggest the solution that will best restore your masculinity.

Male Breast Reduction Procedures

Prior to your surgery, our doctors may recommend you make lifestyle adjustments or stop taking certain medications that are linked to increased breast size in males. Our doctors have found that liposuction alone is often sufficient to remove fat and breast tissue and restore shape and tone to your chest. During this procedure, small incisions are made and fat and breast tissue are removed.  Sometime skin removal is necessary to achieve optimal results.

If excess glandular tissue is causing your male breasts, a larger incision may be required. During this procedure, the glandular tissue responsible for your swollen chest will be removed along with fat and excess skin.

Both methods are done with great care to ensure minimal visible scarring. The end results will not interfere with muscle development. In fact, many men find the removal of excess fatty tissue to be the first step towards the toned, manly physique they have always dreamed of.

Recovery from Male Breast Reduction

Recover from male breast reduction is dependent on the amount of tissue that needs to be removed. For most men, this process takes around two to four weeks. If glandular tissue or a large amount of fat needs to be removed, full healing may take up to six months.

You should be able to return to work and resume minimally physical activities within a few days. Our surgeons recommend you wait at least two weeks before participating in strenuous activities, and until you are fully healed to start lifting weights and adding muscle bulk to your chest. Once healed, a regular exercise routine will help further enhance your upper body appearance.

Like all surgeries, some small risks are involved with male breast reduction. These risks include infection, excessive bleeding, asymmetry, and visible scarring. These risks can be reduced by following our advice after your surgery.
