Insertion Options for Breast Enlargement

Charlotte, Gastonia, and Shelby, NC

At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, our board-certified breast surgeons apply their years of experience to provide you with the safest, least visible breast augmentation insertion options available. During your free breast implant consultation, we will listen to your desires, taking into account breast implant placement and the type of breast implant you are interested in and suggest the incision option that is best suited to provide you with the look you have always dreamed of.

Inframammary Incisions

Inframammary incisions are placed just below your breast. Following you breast’s natural curve, right above your ribcage, this incision produces very minimal visible scarring. In fact, many women find the slight scar left from this option naturally fades within a few short months, becoming almost entirely unnoticeable.

With this incision, your surgeon can perform either submuscular or subglandular breast implant placement. This incision is usually recommended for the placement of silicone implants.

Periareolar Incisions

Periareolar incisions are made around the lower edge of your nipple. This incision is made at the edge of the darker-colored area--the areola-- where your nipple meets your breast resulting in scars that blend naturally with the change in skin color, texture, and elevation. For most women, scarring is nearly invisible shortly after surgery.

Like inframammary incisions, periareolar incisions allow our experienced breast surgeons to place your implants either above or below the muscles in your chest.

Axillary Incisions

Axillary incisions are placed just underneath your arm in the natural folds of your underarm skin. This placement eliminates scars on the breasts, and allows the scar to blend naturally into the wrinkles of your underarm.

At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, our breast surgeons do not often use this type of incision. Axillary incisions do not provide access for implant removal in the case of rupture, requiring additional incisions to be made. Moreover, implants placed through these incisions are more likely to be asymmetric. In addition, this is a very visible location if you happen to experience adverse scarring.
