Eyelid Surgery

Charlotte, Gastonia, and Shelby, NC

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty or eye lift, is a cosmetic procedure to remove fat, muscle, and excess droopy skin from both your upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery greatly improves the aesthetic appearance of your eyes, reducing baggy skin underneath your eyes and restoring a brighter, wider appearance. Additionally, blepharoplasty can improve vision impacted by sagging eyelids. In some cases where there is impairment of your visual fields, some insurance companies may cover the cost of this surgery.

At Southeastern Plastic Surgery our plastic surgeons can restore the appearance of your eyelids with this surgery, but your overall appearance may still be affected by droopy eyebrows and wrinkles. For this reason, eyelid surgery is often combined with other facial procedures like a brow lift to create a youthful, more appealing look. During your free eye lift consultation your surgeon will inform you of additional procedures that may assist you in achieving your desired look.

How Blepharoplasty Is Performed

To perform an eyelid surgery, your surgeon will make incisions along the crease of your eyelid. These incisions are strategically placed to almost eliminate any visible scarring. Once the incisions have been made, excess fat, muscle, and skin are removed and your skin is tightened to produce a larger, brighter eye. If combined with a forehead lift, additional time will be required, but alone, this process takes about an hour.

Recovery from eyelid surgery is relatively short. Some bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort may be present for a few days. This is temporary and can easily be managed with the use of pain relievers. Recovery from lower eyelid surgery can sometimes take longer than surgery on your upper eyelids.  You should be able to return to work within two weeks, but we advise refraining from strenuous activities for at least three weeks to allow your body proper time to heal.

The final results of your eyelid surgery will be apparent as soon as the swelling subsides. Scars are naturally hidden within the creases of your eyes, leaving the only indication that you have had surgery a more appealing appearance. This surgery, alone or combined with other cosmetic facial procedures can work to both enhance your overall appearance, and to draw attention to the natural beauty of your face.

Eye Lift Complications

Complications with eyelid surgery are incredibly rare. Surgical complications like excessive bleeding, and infection along the incisions are possible. These risks are reduced by the care taken during your surgery. Specific complications with this surgery include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Double vision
  • Difficulty closing eyes

These problems are almost always temporary and correct themselves during the healing process. Any discomfort can be managed through the use of mild pain relievers, while swelling and bruising can be dealt with through cold compresses.

Your surgeon will discuss the potential risks with you during your free consultation. We believe that every patient should make informed, thoughtful decisions about their surgical options, and will work to ensure you are fully prepared for any potential complications.
