Breast Reduction
Charlotte, Gastonia, and Shelby, NC
Large, heavy breasts can be both aesthetically displeasing and quite painful. Heavy breasts can produce health problems such as back and neck pain, posture issues, and painful indentations from bra straps. In addition, larger breasts can become a hindrance to physical activities and seriously diminish your quality of life. Due to the health concerns associated with disproportionately large breasts, many breast reduction procedures can be covered by health insurance.
Throughout the years, our board-certified cosmetic surgeons have helped thousands of women reduce physical discomfort and restore a balanced, more appealing look to their breasts. At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, we can customize your breast reduction surgery to provide you with a look that is proportionate to your height and weight, providing increased self confidence and sense of appeal.
Breast Reduction Procedure
All of our breast reductions are performed in either our very own AAAASF-certified surgical center or at an accredited outpatient surgical center. The typical procedure takes 2 ½ to 3 hours, and rarely requires an overnight stay.
During your procedure, you will be placed under anesthesia to minimize any discomfort. Once you are ready, our breast reduction surgeons will make incisions in your breast through which excess skin and tissue is removed. Your nipple will be repositioned into a more appealing location (although it will not be detached from your breast), and excess skin from your areola will also be removed. Your breast is then contoured to match the natural curves of your body before the incisions are sutured and surgical dressing applied.
A breast reduction also achieves the goals of a breast lift, as it not only reduces the size of your breasts, but also gives them a more youthful appearance. During your free breast reduction consultation your plastic surgeon will discuss which procedure is right to ensure you are provided with the final look that most suits your needs.
Recovery from Breast Reduction
For the first few days following your surgery, small tubes will be kept in your breasts to drain excess surgical fluids. A special support bra is necessary during the first three to four weeks to reduce swelling and help your breasts maintain their new shape. During this time, some discomfort is not uncommon. This can easily be managed through the use of mild pain relievers.
Normal activities can most often be resumed after one to two weeks. Our doctors recommend you avoid strenuous physical activities for at least one month to allow your breasts proper time to heal. Once healed, using a sports bra during exercise will provide additional support.
Serious complications from breast reduction are rare. Surgical risks include bleeding, infection, numbness, tissue loss, and blood clots. Breast reduction surgery will leave scars on your breasts. These scars are easily concealable with a bra or swimming suit. Many scars fade over time, but some indication of breast reduction surgery may always be present.
Our doctors are pleased to provide this important service to women who are suffering from the pain, diminished capacity, and physical discomfort of overly large breasts. Working closely with you, we can help ensure that mobility, comfort, and physical appeal are fully restored.
