Breast Reconstruction

Charlotte, Gastonia, and Shelby, NC

Approximately 50,000 women undergo mastectomy surgery in the US every year. Thousands of others choose a lumpectomy, which preserves part of the breast, but removes a portion of the tissue resulting in a disproportionate and uneven look. No matter which form of cancer removal is chosen, the end results can have a dramatic impact on your self-image, self-esteem, and sense of womanhood.

The compassionate breast reconstruction surgeons at Southeastern Plastic Surgery understand how difficult this process can be. We have a long history of working closely with the general surgeons who perform cancer removal surgeries. In most cases, we can reconstruct your breasts immediately following mastectomy and lumpectomy procedures.

Implant Reconstruction

Our board-certified reconstructive surgeons have found that implant reconstruction is by far the best method for breast reconstruction surgery. The surgery itself is less traumatic than other methods, resulting in a much faster healing time. In addition, the aesthetic results are often more pleasing and natural looking.

To perform implant reconstruction, our surgeons create a pocket beneath the pectoralis muscle to provide soft tissue coverage for your tissue expander and breast implant. This method enjoys the benefits of looking and feeling more like your natural breasts, as well as working to provide better soft tissue coverage of your implant.  Our board-certified reconstructive surgeons also use acellular dermis to maximize the coverage of your implant and provide a well-defined pocket for your implant.

Other Reconstruction Options

For women who would prefer to avoid breast implants or require other reconstructive methods, we can perform latissimus dorsi flap procedure with or without implants and the TRAM flap procedure. During these procedures, skin, tissue, and muscles are removed from your abdomen or chest to produce a new breast. Because these procedures are more complex than implant reconstruction and require tissue rearrangement, healing time is often longer. Additionally, the TRAM flap carries additional risks to the abdomen.

Acknowledging the unique needs and desires of each patient we see, our breast reconstruction surgeons will work with you and your general surgeon to help determine what type of reconstructive surgery will best help you achieve your desired look.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer for women in the US. According the National Cancer Institute, over 192,000 women are diagnosed with this disease every year. While there is no way to prevent breast cancer, there is a way to restore your body when a mastectomy becomes necessary. At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, we are proud to offer this important service to women throughout North Carolina.
