Breast Enhancement Placement Options
Charlotte, Gastonia, and Shelby, NC
Breast implants can be placed either directly under the breast tissue, or they can be placed under the breast muscle. The placement can have a significant impact on the quality of your results. Both placements are good options for the right candidate, but which placement is best for you depends on your cosmetic goals and your anatomy.
This page contains some basic information about the two placement options for breast implants, but it can't give personalized recommendations or tell you which is right for you. We offer free consultations to ensure you can get the knowledge you need to make an informed decision about your breast implant surgery. Understanding Breast Implant Placement Options
Breast augmentation is a procedure that can be customized to ensure you get results that look natural, fit your aesthetic goals, and are long-lasting. For breast implant placement, there are two options:
- Directly below the breast tissue (subglandular or Subfascial)
- Under the breast muscle (Submuscular or subpectoral)
At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, we offer both options, depending on which is right for your case.
Advantages of Subglandular Placement
Subglandular placement means that the implant is placed immediately below the breast gland, outside the chest muscle. This is a good option for women who already have enough breast tissue to cover the implant and who are considering a smaller implant, though even then it is recommended that women choose silicone breast implants which give the breasts a more natural look and feel. The advantages of subglandular placement include:
- More pronounced results in some cases
- No interference with pectoral muscle
Disadvantages of subglandular placement include:
- Potential for more interference with mammograms
- Greater likelihood of implant visibility
Advantages of Submuscular Placement
Submuscular placement of the implant puts the implant under the pectoral muscle, which is directly behind the breast. This allows for extra tissue to cover the breast implant, and because it pushes up the breast from behind the muscle, it has the potential to give more natural-looking results for some women. It is especially useful in women with smaller breasts. Submuscular placement can be performed with either breast enlargement incision option. The advantages of submuscular placement include:
- More natural-looking results for some patients
- Implant is more fully concealed
- Lower risk of capsular contracture--hardening of the breast
- Less likely to interfere with mammograms
Disadvantages of submuscular placement:
- Some patients report greater postoperative discomfort and longer healing times
- Interference with breast muscle may be a factor for some women
